Web Design or SEO Ranking or Both?
When making the decision to have your web design and development created for your business, there are few fundamental questions you have to ask yourself. Is the design element more important than the SEO element or can you achieve both?
Well let’s look at a real scenario! I am currently building a clients new website and during the consultation process we had looked at a number of his competitors to see what they were like. By doing this research, we were able to rule out many of the bad ideas and the poor color schemes and start to focus on the good points. However, one important factor became clear early on and that was the number of design error’s my client would have made had he not been guided by us, a web design and development company but also a company that understands internet marketing and the strategies that are involved to optimize a website for good search engine rankings.
What he was able to realize was the difference between the type of website that google rank purely because of the ‘fame’ (amount of traffic) of the entity versus the ones who have SEO search engine optimization (new site with good keyword and SEO construction as a focal point). In other words the Brand Recognition sites had people typing in their name into the URL directly as they were so well known.
The site could therefore be built on flash and did not need good navigation or a lot of keyword rich content or even good design for that matter. This company got the hits anyway. My client however needed to stay away from all these ‘sexy’ ‘simple’ ‘streamlined’ ideas and get a flavor of them instead! He needed to get the organic search engines to find him. He needed to do everything possible to make his site look great, navigate great and be keyword rich to his particular business. ‘Content is King’ definitely is paramount for him. With Flash Google cannot read content and there fore cannot extract the website as being relevant in a person search!
This is a lesson for anyone who is looking to build their own website or have a programmer tell them ‘Flash’ is the way to go. No it is not! Unless, you already are a recognized brand!
